Every enterprise, large or small, needs a secure location to house their servers and network infrastructure. Some organizations have converted that back closet, others have spent tens of thousands of dollars (or more) to build their data center. At the same time, there are commercially available data centers that provide all the resources needed, in the location that’s needed. This article I found does a good job of describing the advantages of outsourcing your data center.
Ten Benefits of Outsourcing a Data Center
While I might not agree that the 10 reasons listed are the best ten or the only reasons, they provide a good foundation of the benefits of co-locating your enterprise infrastructure in an outsourced data center. I believe one key item left off the list is data security. A commercial grade data center, having passed an SSAE-16 audit, will provide a secure environment for enterprise data resources.
If I were to boil the list down from this article to my top items, they would be:
Uptime
Risk Mitigation
Data Security
Connectivity
Focus
Uptime and connectivity are optimized with the redundant power, cooling and connectivity options available in a commercial data center. The commercial data center has the resources, and just as importantly, an incentive, to “keep the lights on” at all times. Risk mitigation comes from locating your data resources away form your main operations. This can be criticality important in an operation with multiple locations and 24×7 operations. And last on my short list is focus – let someone else, who has the time and experience, create and manage the environment that is going to house your precious data assets.
