Ravi Arimilli: My daughter, she’s 15, I’m teaching her how to drive, right? I told her that this is going to be the last generation that will learn how to drive a car. She said, what are you talking about dad? The technology and IT with analytics and big data, etc., is enabling that journey to happen. A lot of these innovations we’re seeing are coming from the open source community.
Rob High: Cognitive systems can bring an advantage to the consumers, to businesses, and to society. Systems that can understand the meaning of literature and written word as well as you and I can. That’s what’s different. That’s what’s changing.
Peter Hofstee: We’re collecting more, and more, and more fine grain data on weather. Healthcare is being individualized, also based on collecting a lot more data, enormous amounts of data. Huge opportunities, but also huge challenges for system design. When we come up with something new that we want to do, Power architecture is the architecture that we turn to.
Ravi Arimilli: With Power you can solve some complex problems in a much simpler fashion than you do the other commodity way.
Rob High: The processing speed, the memory bandwidth, the ability to execute on a massive scale. The underlying inherent security of the system’s ability, the liability of it, are all built in, but yet we haven’t lost any of the simplicity that’s easy to create, easy to deploy, easy to manage.
Ravi Arimilli: I met with many developers that develop on [? X36s]. We started talking to them about what Power can do. At first they were like, we don’t believe you. So we just wheeled it in, we got it up and running. They realized, wow, I have five X more memory bandwidth per thread. If I had that ability then I could do this. Then it would simplify this. Then it would solve that problem. Then it snowballs.
Rob High: With that you know you’re going to be able to get through your development process quicker, you can get through your [? S] processes faster. You’re going to be able to get access to the information that’s relevant to you in your application.
Peter Hofstee: When you add the capabilities of the Power platform to our investment in Linux, OpenStack, open source in general, then you really get the tools you need to innovate. For me Power is the most interesting system to work with. I have the greatest amount of freedom with Power systems. I have unmatched performance, but I also have an unmatched ability to shape the future.
